Top 10 Resident Evil Games

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Resident Evil: Requiem, here are the top Resident Evil titles to date.

Editor's Note:

Resident Evil remakes and the remastered editions were ranked together with the original installments. Each RE installment was judged based on the following criteria: depth of gameplay, fun factor, consumer reception, legacy, and replay value. The rankings are irregardless of whether or not a high resolution version of the game was recreated within the last five years.

Intro:

As a lifelong Resident Evil fan, ranking my favorite RE games may seem like an absolute delight. To the contrary, this was a source of consternation for me. I struggled to find the proper place for each installment within Capcom's legendary pecking order. But alas, I've compiled a list of my favorite RE games based on the criteria outlined above.

10.  Resident Evil 6:

Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Criticized for its clunky gameplay mechanics, and an odd storyline outside of Leon Kennedy's role, RE6 just cracks the list. The replay value is quite low for character choices not named Leon, but there is enough early action and compelling cutscenes to justify this being a noteworthy chapter in Resident Evil lore.

9.  Resident Evil 5

Platforms:  PS3, Xbox 360, Windows, Shield, Android TV, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

If you tried to play this game via a computer co-op partner instead of a human co-op partner, you didn't do yourself any favors. The epic boss battles remain unmatched, although many were so dragged out that they became cumbersome. By buddying up with a fellow Resident Evil fanatic, RE5 was non-stop action from the word go. With more of an arcade feel, Capcom started to venture too far from it's survival horror roots in this installment.

8. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Platform: PS1, Windows, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Raccoon City never looked brighter or eerier than in RE3. The horrifying Nemesis boss is always lurking around any dark corner; creating angst for even the most seasoned player.  Alternating between Jill Valentine and Carlos, the tension-filled and puzzle-centric game is a must play for fans of the franchise.

7. Resident Evil 8: Village

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation VR2, iOS, iPadOS, Nintendo Switch 2

Set in a fictional Romanian-style village, the protagonist, Ethan, hunts for his infant daughter, who is captured and held captive by Lady Dimitrescu. With RE4 fingerprints all over this installment, including: action-oriented gameplay mechanics, walking dead European villagers, and the return of the merchant in a big way, RE8 is the perfect blend of action and horror.

6. Resident Evil 2

Platforms:  PS1, N64, GameCube, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 1&2, and Windows PC.

Leon and Claire are the undisputed torchbearers of this chilling and resource gathering venture. This is unequivocally survival horror at its finest.  Resource management and planning are paramount.  With Racoon City under siege, escaping hordes of zombies and destruction will take more brain power than brawn.

5. Resident Evil 4

Platforms: GameCube, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Wii, Nintendo Switch 1&2, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, macOS, and iOS/iPadOS.

By critics's and consumers's consensus, RE4 is regarded as a revolutionary turning point in Capcom's storied franchise. Leon Kennedy is once again at the center of it all as he attempts to save the president's daughter from a European cult. The action is fast and furious, while resource management via the merchant is critical in advancing through the world unscathed. The mysterious Spanish village setting is among the spookiest and most unnerving to date.

4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, VR2, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Nintendo Switch 2

Ethan Winters is in search of his lost wife and during his quest comes across a dilapidated farmhouse deep in the Louisiana bayou. The opening cutscene is littered with suspense as filmmakers bite off more than they can chew in search of the supernatural. The early portions of the game are chock full of jump scares, but once the action heats up, it's both panic inducing and jaw-dropping.

3. Resident Evil- Code: Veronica

Platforms: GameCube, Dreamcast, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360

Siblings star in this game as Claire Redfield and brother Chris navigate to a faroff prison and an even more secluded laboratory in the Antarctic. The T-078 tyrant that is developed by the Umbrella Corporation is more than a formidable foe. Another set of siblings in Alexia Ashford and brother Alfred, let their bipolar personality shine as memorable antagonists in this timeless installment.

2. Resident Evil 0

Platforms: GameCube, Wii, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox360, and Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

Toggling between two playable characters in Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen, the game's opening sequence is as iconic as they come. An Umbrella corporation-owned train is infested with leeches which eventually turn passengers into zombies. The two heroes fight their way through the living dead, only for the train to come to a screeching halt.

The locomotive derails in the front of a sprawling, but abandoned Umbrella Corporation training facility rife with enemies and danger hiding in every corridor.

1. Resident Evil 1-(Remake)-

Platforms: GameCube,  Wii PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox360, and Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

Finally, the one that started it all. Nothing can top the vast but peculiar Spencer Family Mansion. The Residence is teeming with adversaries and secrets. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine have two divergent but equally enjoyable playthroughs. Planning two steps ahead may still not be enough. This adventure presents a stiff challenge to veteran players.  RE1 is truly unrivaled and exemplary with a replay value and lasting legacy that far exceeds any others within the franchise.
