Spin-offs are seldom well-received by critics and audiences alike. Whether it's comics, television shows, or video games, developers and creators face an uphill climb living up to the iconic status of the core franchise.
So with Silent Hill F captures the spooky and eerie atmosphere of the original, it leaves something to be desired in the other categories.
Set in a fictional Japanese town in the 1960s, the game's protagonist, Shimizu Hinako, has a dysfunctional home life to say the least.
Her father abuses her mother and her older sister moved out of the house after being wed.
Shimizu is caught in a toxic situation that is impacting her mental and physical health. She meets up with friends where she is convinced to take red pills that will alleviate headaches and pains from the stress of her home life.
The pill causes her to hallucinate as her vision is fogged by crimson red lines.
One of her friends is killed by a monster and while Shimizu survives, she is nursed by to health by a man named Fox Mask , who hails from the Dark Shrine.
She is constantly haunted by the monster that possesses her childhood doll and makes her question who her actual friends and enemies are.
There are five possible endings that wrap-up a bizarre and disjointed tale.
While Silent Hill F can't hold a candle to the original installments, it's worth a playthrough if you can get past the contrived story.
